In January 2012, Alex Kofler, a Swedish tattoo artist and the editor of Tattoo’s Gone Awry, tattooed a nude 13-year-old girl to celebrate the Norwegian tattoo brand Hubber. The 13-year-old was shown performing yoga poses, dancing on a barbed-wire fence, and doing bong rips. Later she sat on a bed surrounded by women in bikinis and went to sleep.
“I wanted to do something different, to say things differently,” Kofler told the Times of London. “Young girls with tattoos for kids today, they can express themselves. It’s a very democratic thing. It’s only about a cup of tea and a tattoo.” Alex Kofler tattooing a 13-year-old girl. While most children tattoo artists work on adults, Sütterlin and his staff, which includes his 22-year-old son Léo, tattooed three children over a period of six days. Sütterlin and his colleagues took the children to Tattoo Faux Couture, a store in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. They painted and styled the children’s hair. They gave them haircuts and then, with a mixture of art and persuasion, got them to sit down on a couch. They invited the children to paint their nails. “We had the idea of letting them express themselves,” he told the Huffington Post. Then he tattooed them. On July 23, 2011, Sutherlin tattooed a 13-year-old boy. Léo was tattooing him. When the boy’s mother complained about the drawing, Sutherlin told the Huffington Post he offered to tattoo her instead. The father asked what kind of tattoos they did. Sutherlin told the father he tattooed tattoos on adults, and the father decided he wanted the boy tattooed to match his tattoo. On April 30, 2012, Sütterlin tattooed a seven-year-old boy. On June 16, he tattooed a nine-year-old boy. “You have to be careful if you don’t do it the right way,” Sütterlin told the Times of London. “It’s about taking it slowly.” In the end, Sütterlin tattooed all three of his clients. I decided I wanted to tattoo her name on my back, but because it was such a major piece of artwork, I wanted to do it in a less vulgar way than some of my friends did. I asked my sister if she had any tattoos, and she told me that she’d done one herself, a small one. My sister is very religious. So I figured that was the right way to go about it.”
